Apophyllite is a group of phyllosilicate minerals that are closely related and often found together with zeolites. Apophyllite crystals have stunning clarity and interesting crystal formations. Apophyllite typically forms in prismatic, blocky, or tabular crystals. These crystals often have well-developed faces, and it is common to see them forming as cubic or pyramidal shapes. Apophyllite can also occur as drusy aggregates on a matrix. The mineral is often colorless or white, but it can also be found in shades of green, pink, yellow, or even brown.
Apophyllite has a vitreous to pearly cleavage surfaces. Apophyllite crystals are usually transparent to translucent, and some can be nearly as clear as glass. Apophyllite is typically found in the cavities of volcanic rocks, such as basalts, and in hydrothermal veins. It often occurs in association with other zeolites like stilbite, heulandite, and natrolite. The finest specimens are often found in regions known for zeolite minerals, in India, where large and well-formed crystals are commonly mined.
